About the Canberra Lapidary Club...

The Canberra Lapidary Club formed in October 2000 following the amalgamation of the Canberra Gem Society Inc. and the ACT Lapidary & Mineral Club Inc. In 2003 the previous Canberra Fossicking and Metal Detecting Club Inc. also joined.

The Club has accumulated a wealth of experience and expertise to share in the many aspects of the craft. Visitors and new members are always welcome at monthly meetings, which are held on the second Thursday of each month (except January) at the Clubhouse. At these meetings there is a guest speaker, discussion of Club affairs and exhibits or demonstrations. This is followed by a light supper.

The Club has workshops and meeting facilities where instruction courses are held on an 'as required' basis in cabochon and opal cutting, jewellery making, faceting and carving.

Outings are held monthly. These are usually day trips but occasionally, two or three day trips are arranged to more distant collecting areas.

The Canberra Lapidary Club is a group member of the Gem & Lapidary Council of NSW and a member of the Australian Federation of Lapidary and Allied Crafts Association.

Notice to Club Members - Revision of Club Constitution and Bylaws

Background

Constitutions are subject to periodic refinement – it is good practice to do so.  It was time to review ours because the last time we had made changes was in 2008. Your committee started its review in April 2019 and met throughout the year to discuss it.

In early December the committee invited comments on its advanced draft. The committee thanks all those members who provided comments.  The proposed new Constitution was refined having regard to the feedback received.

Main points to highlight

There had been changes to the model rules issued under the ACT’s Associations Incorporations Act 1991 and the ACT’s general governance arrangements.  Such changes automatically impact on any constitution in the ACT.  Two examples of such changes were a relaxation of audit requirements, and removal of the need for a common seal.

Also included in the draft are changes to our committee structure and size; the use of proxies; and the definition of a minimum voting age.  More details of these proposed changes are available in the  Constitution & Bylaws

Administrative changes

The committee also revised the Bylaws – the purpose of these is to state our expectations and processes for making our club work.  Such rules are binding on all of us – but are more minor and administrative than topics covered by the constitution; as such they are formulated by the committee.

The bullying and harassment codes of practice now referred to in the revision should be seen as reflecting current community standards that we are all expected to observe.

Next Steps

Both the proposed new Constitution, and the revised Bylaws, are at Constitution & Bylaws for your consideration.  Members with no access to email can call the Club on 02 6260 5322 to request hard copy.

The committee will call a General Meeting for 23 January 2020 to vote on a special resolution to adopt the new Constitution.
